Cacao vs Matcha: Which Is Right for You?
Two Superdrinks, Two Very Different Experiences
If you've been exploring the world of conscious, ceremonial beverages, you've likely come across both ceremonial cacao and ceremonial grade matcha. Both are beloved by the wellness community, both have deep cultural roots, and both offer a meaningful alternative to coffee. But they're quite different in how they feel, what they do, and when to reach for them.
At Mother Earth, we love both — and we stock Ceremonial Grade Matcha alongside our full range of Ceremonial Cacao. Here's how to choose.
The Basics: What Are They?
Ceremonial Cacao
Ceremonial cacao is made from whole, minimally processed cacao beans — ground into a paste with all the natural cacao butter intact. It's the purest form of chocolate that exists, with nothing added and nothing removed. It has been used in Mayan and Aztec traditions for thousands of years as a heart-opening plant medicine and ritual tool.
Ceremonial Grade Matcha
Ceremonial grade matcha is the highest quality of Japanese green tea powder, made from shade-grown tea leaves that are stone-ground into a fine powder. The shade-growing process increases chlorophyll and L-theanine content, giving matcha its distinctive bright green colour and calm-focus effect. Ceremonial grade is the purest form — no fillers, no additives.
Cacao vs Matcha: Head to Head
☕ Caffeine & Energy
Matcha contains caffeine — around 35–70mg per serving, depending on the amount used. However, the L-theanine in matcha modulates the caffeine effect, producing a calm, sustained alertness rather than a spike and crash. Many people describe it as “coffee without the jitters.”
Cacao contains theobromine rather than significant caffeine. Theobromine is a gentler, longer-lasting stimulant that dilates blood vessels, increases blood flow to the brain, and produces a warm, open, energised feeling — without the adrenal spike of caffeine. It's more of a heart-lift than a head-buzz.
Choose matcha if: you want sharper mental focus and a caffeine effect.
Choose cacao if: you're caffeine-sensitive or want sustained, warm energy without stimulation.
🧠 Mood & Mind
Matcha promotes calm focus. L-theanine increases alpha brain waves, associated with a relaxed but alert state — ideal for work, study, or creative flow.
Cacao contains anandamide (the “bliss molecule”), PEA (phenylethylamine, associated with feelings of love and connection), and magnesium. It's often described as heart-opening — it can lift mood, soften emotional armour, and create a sense of warmth and presence. It's the go-to for meditation, journalling, and ceremony.
Choose matcha if: you want focused, productive calm.
Choose cacao if: you want emotional openness, presence, or a meditative state.
🌿 Nutritional Profile
Matcha is rich in antioxidants (particularly EGCG, one of the most studied antioxidants in the world), chlorophyll, and L-theanine. It supports metabolism, immune function, and cellular health.
Cacao is one of the most mineral-dense foods on the planet — exceptionally high in magnesium, iron, zinc, and chromium. It also contains flavanols that support cardiovascular health and blood flow. Gram for gram, raw cacao has more antioxidants than almost any other food.
Both are nutritional powerhouses. If you had to pick one for minerals, cacao wins. For antioxidant variety and metabolic support, matcha is exceptional.
🍵 Taste
Matcha is grassy, slightly bitter, and umami-rich. High-quality ceremonial grade matcha (like ours) is smooth and sweet with no harsh bitterness — a sign of proper shade-growing and stone-grinding.
Cacao is rich, earthy, and deeply chocolatey — but without sweetness. It's complex and varies by origin: our Ecuador Cacao is floral and gentle, while our Venezuelan Cacao is bold and intense.
Choose matcha if: you love green, grassy, umami flavours.
Choose cacao if: you love rich, dark, chocolatey depth.
🕏 Ritual & Ceremony
Matcha has a beautiful Japanese tea ceremony tradition — the act of whisking matcha with a chasen (bamboo whisk) is itself a meditative practice. It's a ritual of precision and presence.
Cacao carries the tradition of Mayan and Mesoamerican ceremony — more heart-centred, more emotionally oriented. It's used in group ceremonies, sound baths, and personal ritual as a tool for inner work.
Both reward slowness and intention. Neither should be gulped on the go.
Can You Have Both?
Absolutely — and many of our customers do. Our Ceremonial Grade Duo Bundle pairs 100g of ceremonial grade matcha with 200g of ceremonial grade cacao, so you can explore both and find your rhythm. Some people reach for matcha on work mornings and cacao on slower, more reflective days. Others alternate by season or mood.
We also offer the Mother Earth Matcha + Just Cacao Bundle if you'd like to try both together.
