Ashwagandha: The Ancient Root for Stress, Sleep and Staying Steady

Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years. That's not a marketing line — it's genuinely one of the most studied and longest-used herbs in the world. And unlike a lot of things that get called superfoods, the research on Ashwagandha is actually solid.

The name means "smell of horse" in Sanskrit — a reference to both its earthy scent and the traditional belief that it gives you the strength and vitality of a horse. Whether or not you buy the horse part, the evidence for what it does to your stress response is hard to argue with.

What Ashwagandha actually does

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen — it helps your body adapt to stress rather than just masking it. The main mechanism is its effect on cortisol, your primary stress hormone. Chronically elevated cortisol is behind a huge range of modern health problems: poor sleep, weight gain, low energy, brain fog, anxiety, reduced immunity. Ashwagandha has been shown in multiple clinical trials to significantly reduce cortisol levels with consistent use.

It also supports the HPA axis — the system that governs your stress response — helping it regulate itself more effectively over time.

What people actually use it for

Stress and anxiety — this is the big one. Multiple double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have shown Ashwagandha significantly reduces perceived stress and anxiety scores. It's not sedating — it doesn't make you drowsy or foggy. It just takes the edge off in a way that feels natural rather than chemical.

Sleep — one of the most consistent things people notice is that they sleep better. Deeper, more restorative sleep. This is partly the cortisol effect and partly because Ashwagandha contains compounds called withanolides that have a mild calming effect on the nervous system. It's particularly useful if your sleep is disrupted by a busy mind rather than physical discomfort.

Energy and stamina — counterintuitively, something that helps you relax also tends to improve energy. When your body isn't burning through resources managing chronic stress, you have more left over for everything else. People often notice steadier energy throughout the day with less of the afternoon slump.

Strength and muscle recovery — Ashwagandha has been studied specifically for its effects on muscle strength and recovery in resistance training. It supports testosterone levels and has been shown to improve muscle mass and reduce exercise-induced muscle damage.

Thyroid and hormonal balance — it's been used traditionally to support thyroid function and is often recommended for people with subclinical hypothyroidism. It also supports overall hormonal balance in both men and women.

How to use it

Add half a teaspoon to your evening cacao, warm milk or a smoothie. The earthy, slightly bitter flavour blends well with cacao and honey. Some people prefer to take it in the morning — both work, but evening suits most people better given its calming effect on the nervous system.

Give it 6–8 weeks of consistent daily use before you judge it. The cortisol-lowering effects build gradually. Most people notice improved sleep within the first two weeks, with the full stress and energy benefits coming later.

A note on sourcing

The active compounds in Ashwagandha are called withanolides, and the potency varies significantly depending on the root extract and how it's processed. KSM-66 and Sensoril are the two most studied, standardised extracts — both are root-only, which is important because leaf-based Ashwagandha has a different and less well-studied profile.

Ours is properly sourced root extract. We use it ourselves — that's the standard everything has to meet.

Worth it?

If stress, poor sleep or low energy are things you're dealing with — and most people are — Ashwagandha is one of the most evidence-backed natural options available. It's not a quick fix. But with consistent use, most people notice a genuine shift in how they handle pressure and how well they recover. That's a pretty good return on a teaspoon a day.
