3 Easy Ceremonial Cacao Recipes to Try at Home

Ceremonial cacao is incredibly versatile. Yes, it shines in a traditional ceremonial cup — but it's also a beautiful ingredient in lattes, smoothies, energy balls, and more. Here are three of our favourite easy recipes using Mother Earth ceremonial grade cacao. All three take under 10 minutes and use ingredients you likely already have at home.

A note on cacao: For best results, use a block or pieces of ceremonial grade cacao rather than cocoa powder. Our Ecuador Cacao is wonderfully smooth and works beautifully in all three recipes. The Venezuelan Cacao adds a bolder, more intense flavour if you prefer something richer.

Recipe 1: The Classic Ceremonial Cup

The traditional way — pure, simple, and deeply nourishing.

Ingredients (1 serving)

  • 25–40g ceremonial grade cacao, chopped or grated
  • 200–250ml hot water or oat milk (around 75°C — steaming but not boiling)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • 1 tsp raw honey or coconut sugar (optional)

Method

  1. Chop or grate your cacao into small pieces.
  2. Heat your liquid to around 75°C — hot but not boiling.
  3. Add the cacao and hot liquid to a blender. Blend for 30–60 seconds until smooth and frothy.
  4. Add cayenne, cinnamon, and sweetener if using. Blend briefly again.
  5. Pour into your favourite mug, sit down, and drink slowly with intention.

Tip: Start with 25g if you're new to cacao. Work up to 40g as you get familiar with how it feels in your body.

Recipe 2: Spiced Cacao Latte

Warming, comforting, and perfect for a slow morning or an afternoon treat.

Ingredients (1 serving)

  • 20–25g ceremonial grade cacao, chopped
  • 150ml oat milk (or coconut milk for a creamier result)
  • 100ml hot water
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp cardamom
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 tsp maple syrup or raw honey
  • Optional: ¼ tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. Warm the oat milk in a small saucepan over a low heat until steaming. Don't boil.
  2. Add the chopped cacao and hot water to a blender.
  3. Pour in the warm oat milk, spices, sweetener, and vanilla if using.
  4. Blend for 45–60 seconds until velvety and frothy.
  5. Pour into a wide mug. Dust with a little extra cinnamon to serve.

Tip: This recipe works beautifully with our Prana Ecuador Cacao Block — its natural floral notes pair perfectly with cardamom and cinnamon.

Recipe 3: Cacao & Banana Smoothie

A nourishing, energising smoothie that makes a brilliant breakfast or post-workout drink.

Ingredients (1 serving)

  • 15–20g ceremonial grade cacao, chopped (or use cacao pieces)
  • 1 ripe banana (frozen works best for a thicker texture)
  • 250ml oat milk or almond milk
  • 1 tbsp almond butter or cashew butter
  • 1 tsp raw honey or maple syrup
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Optional: 1 tsp maca powder for extra energy support
  • Optional: handful of ice

Method

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender.
  2. Blend on high for 45–60 seconds until completely smooth.
  3. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  4. Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately.

Tip: For a thicker, more indulgent smoothie, use a frozen banana and reduce the milk slightly. This recipe is a great way to introduce cacao to children or anyone who finds the ceremonial cup too intense — the banana naturally sweetens and softens the flavour.

All three recipes work with any of our ceremonial grade cacaos. Here's a quick guide:
