3 Easy Ceremonial Cacao Recipes to Try at Home

Ceremonial cacao does not have to be used only as a plain drink. These are three simple ways to use it at home without needing a long ingredient list or special equipment.

Use the amount recommended for your cacao and make it as strong or light as you enjoy. You don't need fancy equipment for any of these.

1. Simple everyday cacao

Ingredients

  • 20–25g ceremonial cacao
  • around 200ml hot water or plant milk
  • optional cinnamon, vanilla, chilli, honey or maple syrup

Method

  1. Chop or shave the cacao if it comes as a block.
  2. Add it to hot, not boiling, water or plant milk.
  3. Whisk, froth or blend until smooth.
  4. Taste and adjust the liquid or cacao next time until the cup suits you.

2. Spiced cacao latte

Ingredients

  • around 20g ceremonial cacao
  • 200ml oat milk or another plant milk you enjoy
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • small pinch of cardamom
  • optional honey or maple syrup

Method

  1. Warm the milk gently.
  2. Add the cacao and spices.
  3. Whisk or blend until smooth and frothy.
  4. Sweeten only if you want to.

3. Cacao banana smoothie

Ingredients

  • 10–15g finely chopped cacao
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 250ml oat, almond or another plant milk
  • 1 tablespoon almond or cashew butter
  • pinch of cinnamon
  • optional ice

Method

  1. Add everything to a blender.
  2. Blend until completely smooth.
  3. Taste and adjust the texture with a little more milk if needed.

Which cacao should you use?

Different origins can taste noticeably different. Guatemala, Venezuela, Ecuador and India all have their own source stories and flavour profiles, so use the cacao you already enjoy rather than assuming one origin is required for a recipe.
