Shilajit: The Ancient Mineral Resin That Serious Wellness People Swear By
Shilajit is one of those things that sounds made up until you look into it. A thick, tar-like resin that oozes from rocks in the Himalayas, Altai and Caucasus mountains during summer. Used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years. Called "the destroyer of weakness" in Sanskrit. And increasingly backed by modern research for a range of benefits that are hard to find in a single substance.
It's not pretty. It doesn't taste great. But the people who use it consistently tend to become quietly evangelical about it.
What Shilajit actually is
Shilajit is formed over millions of years from the slow decomposition of plant matter compressed between layers of rock at high altitude. The result is a mineral-rich resin containing over 80 trace minerals in ionic form — meaning they're highly bioavailable and easily absorbed by the body — along with fulvic acid, humic acid and a range of other bioactive compounds.
Fulvic acid is the key. It's a powerful electrolyte that helps transport nutrients into cells and carries waste products out. It also enhances the absorption of other nutrients, which is why Shilajit is often described as a "carrier" — it makes everything else you take work better.
What people actually use it for
Energy and mitochondrial function — Shilajit has been shown to support mitochondrial function — the process by which your cells produce energy. It increases CoQ10 activity in the mitochondria, which is one of the reasons people who take it consistently report a noticeable improvement in energy levels and physical endurance.
Testosterone and male vitality — this is one of the most studied areas. Multiple clinical trials have shown Shilajit significantly increases testosterone levels in men, along with improvements in sperm quality and fertility markers. It's become popular in men's health circles for this reason.
Cognitive function and brain health — fulvic acid has been studied for its potential to inhibit the aggregation of tau proteins — one of the mechanisms involved in Alzheimer's disease. More broadly, Shilajit supports cognitive function, memory and mental clarity with consistent use.
Anti-ageing and cellular health — the combination of fulvic acid, humic acid and trace minerals supports cellular repair and regeneration. It's been used in Ayurveda specifically as a longevity tonic — something you take not for a specific symptom but to support the body's overall resilience over time.
Iron deficiency and anaemia — Shilajit has been shown to increase haemoglobin and red blood cell count, making it useful for people with iron deficiency or anaemia.
Altitude sickness — it's been used traditionally in Himalayan communities to manage altitude sickness, and there's research supporting its ability to improve oxygen utilisation at high altitude.
How to use it
Shilajit resin is taken in small amounts — a pea-sized portion (around 300–500mg) dissolved in warm water, milk or cacao. It has a strong, bitter, mineral flavour that most people find easier to take in cacao or warm milk with honey rather than straight.
Consistency matters more than dose. Take it daily for at least 6–8 weeks before assessing the effect. Most people notice improved energy and sleep quality within the first few weeks, with the deeper benefits — hormonal, cognitive — building over months.
Avoid taking it with tap water that contains chlorine, which can interfere with the fulvic acid. Filtered or mineral water is better.
A note on sourcing and purity
This is critical with Shilajit. Raw, unprocessed Shilajit can contain heavy metals and other contaminants. Properly purified Shilajit — tested for heavy metals and standardised for fulvic acid content — is safe and effective. Cheap, untested Shilajit is not worth the risk.
Ours is purified, tested and sourced from high-altitude regions with a long history of Shilajit use. We use it ourselves. That's the standard.
Worth trying?
If you're serious about energy, hormonal health, cognitive function or longevity — Shilajit is one of the most interesting and well-evidenced substances available. It's not for everyone. But for the people it works for, it tends to become a non-negotiable part of their daily routine.
