Matcha: What It Is, How to Prepare It & Our Tea Family Story

Matcha gets surrounded by a lot of wellness language, but the product itself is interesting enough without making it sound magical.

What is Matcha?

Matcha is finely milled green tea powder. Unlike a normal loose-leaf green tea, where you steep the leaves and remove them, Matcha is whisked into the drink itself.

It contains caffeine because it is tea. The amount varies by product and serving size, and people respond differently to it.

Where our Matcha comes from

Our core Mother Earth Matcha comes through a three-generation tea family relationship in Hangzhou, China: Yuan, his son Alex and little Alex.

Older Mother Earth copy sometimes referred to Japan. That is not the source of our current core Matcha, so we would rather be clear about the family and place actually behind the tea we sell now.

What does “ceremonial grade” mean?

“Ceremonial grade” is widely used in the Matcha market as a quality and drinking-style description, but it is not a single protected legal grade that guarantees the same standard from every seller.

Source, freshness, colour, aroma, taste and clear product information matter more than relying on one phrase on the front of the pouch.

How to prepare Matcha

Start with around 1–2g of Matcha. Add a small amount of hot water, ideally below boiling, and whisk until smooth. Top up with more water or warm milk if you are making a latte.

If it tastes too strong or bitter, use less powder or slightly cooler water next time.

Matcha and Hojicha are different

Our Hojicha comes through the same family tea relationship, but it is roasted tea with a warmer, toastier flavour. It is not simply brown Matcha.

Choose Matcha because you like the taste and the way it fits your routine, not because somebody promised one cup would detox your body, remove a coffee crash or transform your focus.
