A Simple 7-Step Cacao Ceremony

A cacao ceremony does not need to be theatrical or complicated. At its simplest, it is time you choose to set aside, with cacao as part of it.

1. Choose your space

Find somewhere you can sit without rushing. A quiet room is enough.

2. Prepare your cacao

Make the cacao in a way you enjoy. If you are new to it, start smaller rather than deciding you need a very large serving because it is a “ceremony”.

3. Set an intention if you want one

This can be as simple as: What do I need to think about? What am I grateful for? What do I want to give more time to?

4. Drink slowly

Pay attention to the taste and the fact that you have actually stopped for a few minutes.

5. Add whatever practice fits you

That might be journalling, meditation, breathwork, music, prayer, creative work, conversation or nothing at all.

6. Give yourself some quiet time

You do not need to force an insight. Sometimes the useful part is simply having an hour without the usual noise.

7. Close the session

Write down anything you want to remember, tidy the space and get on with your day.

The ceremony is yours. Cacao can be part of it without needing to become the answer to everything.
