How Much Ceremonial Cacao Do You Need for a Group?

One of the first practical questions people ask when they start holding cacao circles is how much cacao to buy. It's a fair question. Nobody wants to run short halfway through an event, and buying far more than you need ties up money for no good reason.

Before worrying about bowls, candles or anything else, have a look at the ceremonial cacao origins we stock. Choose a cacao you are comfortable preparing, then work out quantities from the people who are actually coming.

Start with the serving, not the guest list

There is no single serving that suits everybody. A smaller, mindful cup might use around 20 to 25g, while some people use larger ceremonial servings. Preferences, experience and individual tolerance matter. Cacao contains naturally occurring stimulants, and not everybody wants or should have the same amount.

Ask guests about their preferences in advance. Offer a smaller serving or the option to sit without cacao. You don't need to pressure anybody into a particular amount to make the gathering meaningful.

A simple way to work out your cacao

For ten people at 20g each, you would prepare approximately 200g. At 25g each, that becomes 250g. Add a little spare cacao for measuring, accidental spills or someone changing their mind, rather than trying to pour every cup down to the last gram.

If you're unsure about the different block sizes, read our guide to choosing cacao by pack size. And if you're comparing taste and origins, our Guatemalan origin guide explains why we keep the different cacaos separate.

Think about preparation time

A group cup is not ten individual cups made one after another. Make a plan for warming the liquid, chopping or portioning the cacao, mixing properly and serving without rushing. Check what equipment the room actually has before you arrive.

For a first circle, I would rather see someone confidently serve a simple cup than get caught up in a complicated recipe. Keep water available too, and make sure any milk, sweetener or other ingredient is clearly explained for people with allergies or dietary requirements.

What to buy as a new facilitator

You don't need every cacao origin in the shop. One dependable cacao, a way to weigh it and something that mixes it properly are enough to start practising. You can look at our practitioner kits if you'd rather put the basics together in one order.

And if you're at the stage of learning to guide people rather than simply preparing a drink, the Cacao Facilitator Training pathway covers the practical side of holding a group.

Build the gathering around the people in the room. The amount of cacao matters, but it's only one small part of making someone feel welcome.
